Things You Should Teach Your Children About Laundry

CHOOSING WATER TEMPERATURE:

Choosing the right water temperature can have a huge effect on the outcome of your clothes.

USE COOL WATER FOR:

– Items washed on the delicate cycle, such as lingerie, washable silk, wools

– Items with delicate construction, such as an antique fabric, or a lacy fabric

– Any item that you think is going to bleed in another water temperature

– Items that have stains, such as a blood stains, dairy-based stains or bodily fluids

Items that aren’t exceptionally dirty

USE WARM WATER FOR:

– Darker colours

– Synthetic materials

– Items that are moderately dirty

USE HOT WATER FOR:

– Bath Towels, sheets and all other bedding

– Kitchen Towels, dish rags, pot holders

– Very dirty items (sweaty work-out clothes, etc)

– Items made with a more sturdy fabric, such as white cotton t-shirts or underwear

– All cloth diapers

– Cleaning rags and cloths

SORTING CLOTHES BY COLOUR

There are distinct piles you should use to sort your clothes: whites, darks, lights, jeans, and delicates.

SORTING CLOTHES BY FABRIC WEIGHT

Please note that colour is not the only consideration when sorting clothes. The weight should be considered as well.

For example, if you have several pairs of heavy cotton pants, then you don’t want to wash those with thin t-shirts.

It’s best just to separate these from the start and wash them in two separate loads.
